The laid-back family haunt serves distinctive waterfront cuisine, cold craft beers on tap, and an expansive menu with plenty of options. They go well with live music, cold beer and everything else this waterfront shack has to offer. The Lazy Flamingo 3 is a staple Southwest Florida restaurant for locals and tourists, with four total locations. I like to get a basket to share, and a second just for me. But those hush puppies, those giant crisp-on-the-outside creamy-tender-on-the-inside hush puppies, are wondrous. The fish tacos are great, as is the grouper Reuben, the gator bites, the frog's legs. But it's the hush puppies (yes, the hush puppies) that I fawn over. One of my favorites on Matlacha, I love everything about this pastel-painted seafood shack.

There are biscuits and gravy, Reubens, wraps and hand-made crab cakes packed with local crab meat. Lilly's crafts thick breakfast sandwiches packed with meats and eggs or portobello and avocado, depending on your mood. In it you'll find home cooking at its finest.

Just north of the four-way stop sign, this gem is tucked into the corner of an L-shaped strip mall. A shaded wrap-around deck offers stunning views of the water and is the perfect spot for sipping a cold beer.

It's a long drive, but the Waterfront rewards it with thick burgers, seafood pot pie and a gloriously creamy clam chowder with a biscuit topper baked right into it. You'll pass the Moose Lodge and the American Legion, the VFW and the KOA with its red and yellow, X-marks-the-spot camping sign.
